ZHENHAI CULTURE AND ART CENTRE,
TONGJI ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING
The three buildings of the Zhenhai Cultural and
Arts Centre are connected by corridors, evoking the
structure of a water molecule. The role of the lighting
is to accentuate the building’s architectural form.
Lighting designer Tian Xiang of Ningbo Yongqi
Lighting worked with the architects to develop a
façade design in which two concealed LEDs are fitted
at the bottom of each diamond-shaped void in the
mesh. Each LED is installed with seven-degree lenses,
and tilted 60 degrees upwards to light the upper
frames of the diamond while avoiding reflections
from the glass.
The scheme has won an IALD Award of Excellence
for the effect the designers achieved. According to one
judge, ‘the light sources are so carefully integrated that
the architecture seems to glow by itself’.
The lighting designers used a control system that
allows each of the 50,000 red, green, blue and white
LEDs to be controlled individually. To save energy, a
power-saving mode is used for the lights the roof, the
façade light can be turned off and the gallery light
reduced by half.
