How should a designer respond to a complex brief to
design a multi-functional office lobby with a relaxing
zone, waiting zone, transition zone, and also a place
for private meetings?
At the BGRT office building in Bangalore, lighting
by Collaborative Architecture plays a lead role in
establishing the overall architectural identity, and the
lighting design and architectural space merge into a
The lobby is dominated by a central column that
supports the waffle slab system that spans the 32
x 32m space at a height of 9m. The architectural
lighting stems from this anchoring column, which
is clad with Corian panels with special details for
The custom-designed seating cluster creates an
undulating topography of contoured volume at eye
level, complementing the undulating pattern on the
ceiling. The pattern of the waffle slab system was a
springboard for the design of the customised lighting.
Recessed lighting along the bottom of the sofa clusters
adds a floating effect.
LED light sources have been used throughout the
project: LED tubes, LED panels and 5W LED spots.
A building management system controls the lighting
through Dali ballasts. Glazing on two sides allows
ample daylight to enter the lobby.
