The new Bloomberg HQ replaces a building on
an important archaeological site discovered in the
1950s where a temple to the Roman god Mithras
was revealed. More than 400 fragments of ancient
writing-tablets were found; the collection is the largest
and earliest of its kind in Britain and Bloomberg
is creating a museum on the site. The retail arcade
running through the building near St Paul’s Cathedral
and the Bank of England is intended to reinstate part
of Watling Street, the old Roman road.
Energy efficiency was not only a key consideration
in the lighting specification but also in the building
process. During construction, the use of LED
lighting is reckoned to have saved around 500,000
Kwhr and £ 80,000 in energy.
