ON TURNING 50
How to mark the 50th volume of a magazine? We don’t like cliches. We didn’t want
retrospectives or lists: how lighting technology has changed over five decades,
50 of the best lighting schemes, the most influential people of the past half century.
Such things are often banal, subjective, prescriptive and quite frankly unfair as various
people, places and developments are overlooked in the farrago of achievements.
It’s easy to trip over milestones.
As a magazine we have always sought to provoke thought and provide inspiration. To
discuss lighting on a more intellectual level, perhaps, and celebrate, above all, the visual.
So in addition to our regular type of features, that’s what we’ve done: celebrated the nature
of light in all its manifestations in a special section. It’s a miscellany. Light is an elusive
element that can’t be pinned down. It is about art and science, absence and presence,
history and future, prose and poetry. It manifests itself in extraordinary ways in both the
manmade and the natural world.
In some respects we were inspired ourselves by a wonderful book which came out
in 2014, You See Light, I See Shadow, published by Art and Theory Publishing
( www.artandtheory.org). It’s highly recommended – if you like us you will like it.
It celebrates the values we have always stood for: aesthetics, thoughtfulness, intelligence,
inspiration and art.
Times change and things move on, and as we celebrate the 50th year of our existence
(in a number of manifestations and with humble origins) we are on the verge of another
shift. We will no longer be publishing six times a year, but will appear less often, with
plans to supplement the fewer issues with a website presence.
Thank you for reading us and appreciating us. The response we have received from
around the world has been immensely gratifying as an editor. In a world of increasingly
questionable values and rickety standards, it has been reassurring to know that quality
still stands for something.
