Church on the Water in Yufutsu (1988):
Ando uses cross-like forms to frame the view
to the outside. Here the aim is to create a
further spiritual aspect with the cross in the
window overcoming the distance between
the congregation and the cross on the water.
Depending on the orientation, the cross
traces the course of the sun with a shadow
pattern moving quietly across the floor

‘After sunset, a light line between wall and
roof renders the contour of the sky space’
