ONE STEPHEN STREET, LONDON
ORMS
Architectural practice Orms has transformed
the former London headquarters of music giant
EMI into high-end office space. To create an
arresting lighting installation in the lobby of One
Stephen Street, the firm worked with suppliers to
develop a modified version of the Queen pendant by
Mammlampa. The fitting – of corroding steel finished
internally with 23.75-carat gold plate – has an
exposed incandescent lamp assembly as standard, but
this was replaced with an indirect LED arrangement
of four modules mounted on a specially-constructed
chassis behind a double-skinned opal diffuser. This
provides uplighting and the diffuser glows gently.
The diffuser is designed to ensure the chassis and
LED module assembly are occluded from view and
that any shadowing from the assembly is minimised.
The luminaire is supported by hollow brass rods that
effectively clamp the shade. The upper rod is fixed
into a bespoke plaster-in ceiling rose. Cabling passes
down through the rods into the chassis and feeds the
LED modules. Drivers are mounted remotely.
