Well Dom, here is my advice to you from your future
self. First Memphis will become the design movement
that will break the mould, so don’t get too disheartened
by liking pink and lavender.
Computers, Hoovers, phones… all of them will be
influenced by Ettore Sottsass and his fellow designers.
Good to know eh?
Avoid, or copyright, the letter ‘i’ depending on
whether you what to jump off the bandwagon or own
it. Also, you know that bizarre light fitting with the
weird light bulbs? (By the way they are called lamps
not bulbs – bulbs are what you plant in the ground.)
Well, you should spend a bit more time thinking
about where the light is going and a bit less time
thinking about how great it looks (it doesn’t really
look that good anyway) because that will help you in
your future career.
On a practical note, my advice is not to buy all 25
people on your course a drink on your 19th birthday
and then accept almost every drink they individually
offer you in return. You may be able to handle it when
you are 19 but you will not be able to when you are 50,
On the subject of Careers, don’t get too hung up on
what design job you are going to do because by the
time you get to the workplace the number of creative
things that you can do – and get paid for – will be vast,
with lots of them not even existing a few months, let
alone a few years, previously.
Don’t worry about fashion or music – it will all be the
same. In fact don’t throw away those brogues because
you will need them when your son gets married. Do
try to draw with a pencil every day because you don’t
want to lose your eye and the sheer joy or drawing
something in front of you.
Finally, you know you think it will, in the end, ‘all be
fine’… well, it will be… if you think that ‘all being
fine’ means that you will end up doing something
that never even entered your head when you were
doing art foundation.
