LOW BUDGET PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Taichung World Flora Exposition, Taiwan
The Taichung World Flora Exposition took place over
six months starting November 2018 on a 60ha site in
Taichung, one of Taiwan’s major cities, and attracted
around 8m visitors. The stunning Bamboo Pavilion,
constructed from moso and makino bamboo, evoked
a walk through the island’s forested central mountain
range. With a budget of just £ 10,000 for the lighting,
OuDelight ruled out using a dimming control system,
and also opted for all the interior and exterior LED
fixtures to come with the same housing but different
wattage and beam spread angles. The effect was further
enhanced by using water around the pavilion as a
mirror for the architecture, materials and lighting.
Through sophisticated calculation and planning, this
low-cost lighting system achieved the dual purpose of
making visitors aware of the beauty of the architecture
and of creating a delightful public space at night.
Lighting design is still at an early stage in Taiwan and
this project proved an ideal way to demonstrate its
value both to the public and the government.
