Omaha
Trevor Hollins pushes the boundaries
of physical-based lighting simulation
at HDR in Omaha, using advanced
rendering solutions and VR to perform
lighting calculations, validate designs,
and communicate concepts to project
stakeholders. Soon after joining HDR
he became an industry mentor for
the same University of Nebraska
MAE graduate design classes that he
attended. He leads a studio team of
six, which has been awarded eight
IES Awards of Merit since 2014.
Recent projects include a tropical
conservatory, medical and health
centres, performing arts venues and
a ‘technology library’ for tomorrow’s
engineers and innovators, some of
them possible interns at HDR.

Guojian Hu
Shanghai Ruiyi Design
Shanghai
Guojian Hu holds a doctorate in
engineering, architectural design and
theory from Tongji University, China,
where he specialised in lighting and
vision research. His Master’s was in
architecture, technology and science.
He has won a string of awards from
the IES, the Asian Lighting Designers
Association and the Shanghai Lighting
Society among others for projects
including the Shanghai Natural History
museum, Nanjing Baiyunting Culture
and Art Centre, and masterplanning
the nightscape lighting of the 2010
Shanghai Expo. He has also written
and presented on a variety of topics,
particularly museum and gallery
lighting and with special emphasis on
visual perception.
John Jacobsen
Schuler Shook
Chicago
John Jacobsen is a project lighting
designer with a mastery of control
systems that stems from a creative
theatre background, starting with a
BFA from Pennsylvania State University.
Five of his projects have won IES
Illumination Design Awards of Merit.
Of particular note are the University
of Chicago Saieh Hall for Economics
and the Wallis Annenberg Center for
the Performing Arts, both repurposed
historic buildings. A member of
the IALD Energy and Sustainability
Committee. He has also spoken at
multiple lighting industry events, and
presents lighting design workshops at
Schuler Shook and on campuses.
