Reiko Komiyama Kagawa became a
principal at Sladen Feinstein Integrated
Lighting, Boston, in 2017. A colleague
speaks of her having a ‘limitless thirst
for knowledge, a genuine interest in
giving back to younger designers, all
the while maintaining a great work-life
balance,’ so that both as a mentor and
as mother, she has been a role model.
A LEED Accredited Professional,
she studied architecture at Oyama
National College of Technology and
earned her Architectural Licence in
Japan in 2002. She later gained a BSc
in interior design from Mount Ida
College in Massachusetts, where she
now also teaches lighting design.

‘Now is the time to be a lighting
designer,’ says Kera Lagios.
‘Architectural lighting has come
into its own, and lighting designers
are uniquely positioned to lead the
charge.’ She has not only designed
the lighting for Net Zero Energy, LEED
Platinum and WELL-certified buildings
at Integral, but was also a co-founder
of the software company Solemma,
which developed the energy modelling
DIVA-for-Rhino plug-in for Rhinoceros
3D. Solemma spun out of the Graduate
School of Design at Harvard where
she gained an MArch. She presents
regularly at gatherings such as
the Architecture Boston Expo and
Radiance International Workshops.
‘We need to be asking
questions that go
beyond our conventional
roles and ask, how can
lighting be used to solve
the problem at hand?’
